The House System

The school has had a number of different House systems over the years, but it has always had houses.

Malton Grammar School had four houses: Carlisle, Fitzwilliam, Holgate, Willoughby, though until 1914 when numbers began to grow, only two of these, Fitzwilliam and Holgate, were in place.

Two trophies remain in school - the first a 1912 wooden shield, with winners from 1913-1931, the second a silver cup with winners from 1939-1970

I am not sure what happened during 1932-1939

Patricia Gorringe kindly e-mailed in 2010 to tell me the house colours: Carlisle, Fitzwilliam, Holgate, Willoughby

Malton County Modern houses were: ?

Malton School had four houses named after local abbeys: Byland, Kirkham, Rievaulx, Rosedale (colours provided by Carol Peters following an enquiry in 2010)

This changed to three houses as roll numbers reduced: local rivers this time, of Derwent, Rye and Seven

In 1999 it reverted to four houses: Air, Earth, Fire, and Water

The House Shield pictured above was used from the start of the school (1912) until 1932. A couple of annual plaques are missing, but the rest give a list of winners for the first 20 years.

The D'Arcy Cup was used from 1939 until 1970, and engraved annually with the winning house name. There is a 1953 news clipping of Molly Wright and Chris Tyson holding the cup, as captains of Willoughby House.

In 2000 deputy head Steve Fearnley created a house shield, together with emblems for the four new houses. Coloured shields have been added annually to the main trophy.

In 2017 headteacher Rob Williams decided that with increasing rolls, there should be 5 houses, with tutor groups in each year forming a complete house group. He reverted to the 1911 names, and added Tudor as the 5th house, with silver as its colour. Steve Fearnley made a set of new shields, in memory of Sheila Pratt.
