The Endowed Grammar Schools of East Yorkshire

John Lawson

A small 34-page booklet about the grammar schools in East Yorkshire. East Yorkshire is taken in a geographical sense, rather than the East Riding, and includes, as well as Malton, grammar schools in York, Shipton, Easingwold, Coxwold, Helmsley, Pickering, Thornton le Dale, Scarborough, Bridlington, Kilham, Beverley, Halsham, Hedon, Hull, Sancton, Howden, Pocklington, Hemingbrough, Barmby, Drax, and Acaster.

The book charts the history of the schools, in particular giving the background to why the school at Malton struggled to survive over the years - it was bound by statutes laid down in 1547, that did not fit well with the changing needs in education, nor with the change in land prices or wages, where specific amounts had been set down by Archbishop Holgate in the foundation documents for the school.

Printed by the East Yorkshire local history society in 1962.

An interesting read for anyone interested in the history of schools and schooling.
