Year 11 Leavers' proms Malton School

Posted on 27 February 2024 I thought it was time to tackle getting the Year 11 Leavers' Prom pictures up to date, filling in some gaps where I can, and bringing them all into the new site format. The events have taken place at the end of year 11 since 2003, and 2003-2006 have been on the website for some time. I have left those in the old format for now, while adding photos from 2007 onwards, and creating a new index page.

Posted 26 February 2024 Malton School is to open The Sheila Pratt Memorial Sixth Form Study Centre at the end of this term, which has been converted from the former Grammar School hall, then library, using a large legacy that Sheila left to the School. Sheila was at school 1943 - 1950: some tributes to her are on the website. If anyone reading this remembers Shiela, the School would be happy to invite you along to the formal opening of the Memorial Centre, if you able to attend. If you email me in the first instance I will pass on details to the School.

1970s head boy badge

Posted 6 February 2024 A photo of a head boy badge sent in by Mark Windle in February 2024. He confirms he was head boy from 1976-7, and that Jayne Wilford was head girl at the same time, as noted in the Head Boys and Girls list on the site.

Posted 2 February 2024 A photo of Alan Hughes, who died towards the end of January 2024. Posted by his son Graeme on M&N Memories Malton and Norton Memories Facebook Page . Alan was a pupil at MGS from 1959 - 1967, and went on to teach chemistry (with Howard Campion) at Fulford School, 1979 - 2008.

1983 Filey Lifeboat crew

Posted 30 January 2024 Another photo spotted on M&N Memories Malton and Norton Memories Facebook Page . This lifeboat crew includes John Whitehead, who was youth tutor at Malton School from 1971 - 1981, before moving to Filey. This photo prompted an update to the In Later Days page - a gallery of photos of staff and students after they had left school.

1958 Malton Scouts Cobra Patrol

Posted 28 January 2024 A news clipping posted by John McMurran on M&N Memories Malton and Norton Memories Facebook Page in May 2018. This is Cobra Patrol from 1958, at a camp in Kirkdale with Mr Sargeant (the scoutmaster). Seeing this prompted me to update the existing pages on Scouts and Guides available on this site.

Greengate School, 1955

Posted 26 January 2024 Three photos posted on M&N Memories Malton and Norton Memories Facebook Page . The two of students are from 1944 and 1955, and the building in late 1950s, probably close to its demolition.

More datails oare on the Other School groups page, and the Malton buildings page

Bower Memorial School 1900s

Posted 25 January 2024 A photo of the Norton Bower Memorial School spotted on M&N Memories Malton and Norton Memories Facebook Page in January 2024, too good not to include on this site in the Other Schools pages. Children and teacher all with the stern faces common to early photographs - the post suggests this one is around 1900.

Malton School Celebration Evening 2023
Malton School Celebration Evening 2023

Posted 9 January 2024 The annual Celebration Evening for Key Stage 4 and 5 students took place just before Christmas, and as usual my woodturning business oldfern provided individual trophies for the winning students. It was the 25th such evening - I introduced the first one to the annual school calendar in 1999. More details and photographs of the individual trophies can be found over on my woodturning website, www.oldfern.co.uk. Further details about Celebration Evenings are available on this website.

Maltonian September 1965

Posted 3 January 2024 I have been scanning another of The Maltonian magazines. This one is The Maltonian, September 1965, Issue 120, and it is a large edition, with 110 pages, plus 20 pages of adverts. I have made the usual compromise between file size and clarity in converting this to a pdf document hopefully it is readable on screen. I have put the adverts in a separate pdf to help restrict the file size.

The magazine covers the usual areas of school life and communications from Old Maltonians, as well special features on the publication of The History of Malton Grammar School, a fond memorial of Thomas Arthur Williams by Mr Barty, sad memories of a student who had died - Simon Reed, thoughts on the looming prospect of comprehensive education (by DJP - I think probably Mr Pay). The adverts include The Floral Cafe at Rillington, and the York County Savings Bank (5% interest!). The whole was edited by Mr Lucas, and is printed on good quality glossy paper by Horsley & Dawson printers, Driffield.

The Maltonian 2023
Malton Grammar School Hall

Posted 17 December 2023 On a recent visit to the School I was invited to have a look at changes underway in Room 40, East Wing. In recent years this had served as a computer room, but is being changed to a Sixth Form study area, incorporating a mezzanine floor to make use of the height of the room. Originally this was the Grammar School Hall, until the 1959 extensions took place and a new hall and gymnasium was built, then it became the library until 2000, when it changed to a computer laboratory. The development is being funded from a legacy left to the school by former student Sheila Pratt. I took this opportunity to update all pages relating to Shiela Pratt, Room 40 and the 1959 extensions.

The Maltonian 2023

Posted 28 October 2023 I don't normally cover current day events at Malton School, leaving that to the Malton School website, but it seems appropriate to mention a recent online publication of the latest Maltonian. This is a 26 page edition, in electronic form only, available to read as a flip book , or download as a pdf.

This prompted me to update the news index on this site, and there is now a page covering the changes to the web news pages over the years (1999-2023), and the newsletters (1980, 1999-2023).

1920s MGS Panoramic photo
1925 MGS Panoramic photo

Posted 24 October 2023 Two photos sent to me by a lady from Norfolk, Joanna Hurst, who found them at an auction sale in Watton, alongside a photo of her grandmother age 13. No apparent connection to Malton - her grandmother went to The Convent of the Sacred Heart in Swaffham. Joanna kindly donated the originals, which will go into the School archive after a little repair and attention. I haven't seen the first before, and it is difficult to date. The only member of staff I recognise is Mr Williams on the far left. The second is from 1925, clearly dated. Margaret Paulin lent me a copy of this one to scan some years ago, so it has been on the website in the Panoramics section for some time, though incorrectly dated 1926. They are also saved as pdf copies for anyone wanting to inspect in a little more detail 1920s roll, and 1925 roll

2005 football training

Posted 22 October 2023 A photo posted by Jim Rooney on M&N Memories Malton and Norton Memories Facebook Page in April 2023. A little research in the April 2005 Newsletter suggests it is a Year 11 football training afternoon organised by James Staff (in the centre), involving former Malton student and York City player at the time, Darren Dunning. Ben Boothman, Ross Harrison, Darren Dunning, Oliver Peck, Sam Gilderdale amongst others are in the photo.

Sixth Form Leavers Pickering 2002

Posted on 20 October 2023 I have updated the page with a few photos from the 2002 leavers do at The Forest and Vale, Pickering. There are only 5, but there are prints from the evening in the school archive somewhere, waiting to be scanned. I have no photos from the events in 1997 - 2001. Does anyone out there have any snaps to add to the archive? A scan would be very much appreciated.

Sixth Form Leavers Helmsley 2003

Posted on 19 October 2023 Lizzie Hunt (Lizzie Stallybrass) contacted me recently to say thanks for the website. She is now living in Zambia with husband Dan and her 3 young boys, having spent 7 years in Jordan and the Middle East (Dan works for the Foreign Office). They have bought a house in Newton in Rawcliffe, so are looking forward to returning "home" in the not too distant future. Her email prompted me to re-vamp the 2003 Sixth Form Leavers page, the year that Lizzie left school. She was able to put a number of names to photos when she contacted me back in 2014. Lizzie is on the right in the purple dress in this photo.

Sixth Form Leavers Helmsley 2004

Posted on 15 September 2023 Another set of Sixth Form leavers' prom photos have been added to the site, this time from 2004 when the group once again gathered in the market square, Helmsley, before going in to The Feathers for their event. Everyone is named on this photo - click on it to see who they all are.

Malton National School 1951

Posted on 13 September 2023 Another gem from Brian Botterill, posted on M&N Memories Malton and Norton Memories Facebook Page . A little creased, but all the more atmosphere to it as a result. This is what looks like a winning football team. I can just make out 1950-51 on the ball. It has been added to the National School gallery.

Malton County Modern Football XI 1958-9

Posted on 2 September 2023 A photo I haven't seen before, spotted on M&N Memories Malton and Norton Memories Facebook Page , posted by John Tolson. I am a little confused by left and right positions on people's comments, but my best summary of them is: Back: Raymond Craggs, xxx, David Raines, Brian Goforth (PE teacher), John McMurren, Mike Walker. Middle: xxx, Nigel Watson, Derek Cuthbertson (with ball), John Tolson, Andre Dixon. Front: Peter Myers, xxx, Terry Pugh. Someone also mentioned Mike Inkley?

Front: Christopher Sellars, Alec Cuthbertson, Brian Goforth (PE teacher), John McMurran, Kenneth Calvert. Holding the ball Keith Thompson.

About the Maltonians Website

Welcome to the third incarnation of the Maltonian Website. Work started on making it into a "responsive" website in March 2022, as well making it a cleaner, simpler site to browse and navigate. With over 800 pages to convert, this could take some time! The previous version was started in October 2013, and before that the first site appeared in 1999.

During the period of upgrading browsers will come across old pages, but hopefully the key index pages will all have been converted. It may be that some old, infrequently visited pages will remain in an archive only format.

The site provides an archive for former students and staff, as well as advice on how to help the current students at Malton School, and a reference point to tell its story over so many years.

Site Manager

The site was first created by Steve Fearnley, former deputy head at Malton School 1993-2012. He continues to develop and manage the site in his retirement, with a new mobile-friendly look being developed in 2022.

Photographs

The Maltonian Web aims to display all the photographs which are in the school's archive. These start in 1911 and go up to the present day. There is a policy of not including named individual photos of current students.

Documents

Many archive documents have already been converted to a web format. These appear on the site in that format, whilst many more have been scanned as pdf documents and included as a downloadable resource.

Make a bequest

The School has benefited from donations and bequests in the past, most notably from Alma Collier which allowed the creation of a new library, and more recently from Alex Joannidis (in 2014) and Sheila Pratt (in 2015). A number of commemorative prizes and trophies have been created. If you would like to make a bequest or a donation, please get in touch with myself or the headteacher about how you can help.

The Maltonian

The Maltonian was a school magazine published by Malton Grammar School each term, from 1917 until 1971. Most copies still survive in the school archive. The Maltonians website first appeared in 1999. It was created by Malton School's deputy head at the time, Steve Fearnley, and was intended to exploit the relatively new phenomenon of growing internet access to share memories of the School's past.

The old school website, created by Graham Magee, and the Maltonians site were suspended in 2011, when the School bought a commercially produced website.

The Maltonians Website

This thirdR version seeks to continue the work started in 1999, acting as a point of contact and preserving records of Malton School, Malton Grammar School, Malton County Modern and Malton National School.
