Malton School

The Maltonian Website - for Malton School

News pages

New additions to the website, and contacts from former students and staff, are now reported on the index page (the Home page). When the site started in 1999, there was a page separate to the Index, called "What's New", which was a simple text page listing what additions had been made, and giving links to some of these. Pages from previous years are still available (listed below), and for those interested, give an insight into how and why the website was created, and how it has developed over 24 years.

A 'What's New' log has been kept since the old website's creation back in 1999. This version ran from 1999 to 2012. These logs are still available - reading them gives a picture of how the site developed, and who was keeping in touch through the site.

The What's New page listed new additions and contacts received. No photos included at this stage, just text and hyperlinks.

No website additions

There were no additions made to the website during 2011 - 2013, and no live site existed. A new site was created and launched in March 2014.

2014 Maltonians website index page

I retired from Malton School in August 2012. In 2013 I made a proposal to re-design and restore the Maltonians website, which had been a little dormant in my final year at work, and then almost static in 2013. A complete re-write of all the code for the site, which required quite a lot of new learning for me, resulted in a new version, launched in March 2014. To start with, the left hand column listed new additions to the site, the right hand column listed contacts from former students and staff.

The Responsive Site 2022 onwards

Site index pages: 2022 2023

In March 2022 the whole coding of the website began to be changed to create a "responsive web design", capable of adapting to browsing on different size screens, in particular on mobile phones.

The first new index to the responsive site worked in a four column layout. This proved more difficult to manage, and to read, than the text flow of the previous site index, so it was changed after a few months.

An amendment was made in September 2022, to allow photos and text to flow down two column, rather than across 4 columns, similar to the pre-2022 format. Horizontal lines and date stamps broke up the additions.

Newsletters

Newsletters were published every half term from 1996 onwards. There were a couple from Mr Gresswell back in 1980 which are still in the archive, but little in between.

Newsletters underwent various transformations as technology improved, shown below. The last printed newsletter appears to be in 2020, after which news reporting switched to a monthly online "blog", presented through the Malton School website. In 2023 an edition of "The Maltonian" was published - 26 pages, full colour, reviewing the previous year. However, this was an electronic copy only, presented as a page-turning online book via the Malton School website.

A full index of all newsletters in the archive is available.
1996 Malton School newsletter

In 1996 newletters were printed in house at the beginning of each half term, and sent home with all students, as well as being posted to anyone connected with the school. Usually 4 sides of A4, black and white, text only.

2010 Malton School newsletter

With improvements to in-house printing technology, newsletters became full colour productions, and included photographs for the first time, though with a policy of not naming individual students who were still in school.

2011 Malton School newsletter

A re-vamp followed in 2011 to align with a design used in the new prospectus, produced by a marketing company that designed the school a "corporate image". The four ribbons represent the colours of the four school houses

2014 Malton School newsletter

In 2014 the whole design of the newsletter was taken on by MB Design Ltd in Lincolnshire. It became a full colour gloss presentation, and was named Maltonian, in recognition of the old school magazine. Print runs reduced to 3 per year.

2020 Malton School newsletter

The last printed newsletter appeared during the Covid lockdowns, 2020. Subsequently news was presented on monthly blogs on the school website, and a Facebook page . No printed newsletters have been circulated since.

2023 Maltonian

In summer 2023 a 26 page online edition of The Maltonian appeared, reviewing the year that had just passed. This was an electronic pdf copy only (downloadable from the Malton School website, or open it from here), embracing current technology and browsing habits and saving money on the cost of printing.
