Alma Collier

1913 - 1997

Alma Collier (née Knowles) did not spend long at Malton School. The Maltonian magazine of April 1928 records her coming, and the December edition of the same year records her departure, as she left to join Whitby County School.

When she died sixty-nine years later, she left £18000 to the School in her will. At the time we knew little about her, but press coverage of the mystery bequest resulted in people who had known her writing to us to fill in some details. She had spent most of her life in Whitby, having settled there and married Bill Collier. Her mother ran The Jolly Sailors public house in Whitby.

In retirement Bill and Alma often took day trips to York, where Alma eventually settled for the last years of her life. They loved the drive over the moors, and would stop in Malton for a coffee on their way.

Bill and Alma gave generously to charities throughout their life. They did not have children of their own, but her bequest has ensured that children at Malton School will benefit from her kindness for many generations to come, and her name will not be forgotten. We have dedicated the library she funded to her memory.
