The Maltonian Web

Progress log

  • 4 August 2018 More leavers' prom pictures, this time from the Year 11 2003 prom - the first one that Year 11 had.
  • 29 July 2018 A new house system introduced by The School this year commemorates Sheila Pratt. The house names have reverted to the old Grammar School names, with one addition: Carlisle, Fitzwilliam, Holgate, Tudor and Willoughby. Willoughby won the 2017-8 competition. Further information on this year's house competition and new Malton School House shields is available.
  • 8 July 2018 I am sure there were some school proms last month. Here are some pictures from the Year 13 prom 2006, held at the Feathers in Helmsley.
  • 7 July 2018 Returned from an enjoyable holiday sailing around the British Isles. Some amendments to the posters page, which was not loading the correct posters from links. Apologies to anyone who has been trying to look at the larger versions.
  • 4 June 2018 I have made a couple of additions to the index of archive documents, plus a little tidying up on the page.
  • 3 June 2018 I have put a set of 32 posters from 2000-2009 on the site. These were usually printed A3 size for display in school, and A4 versions were inserted into some newsletters.
  • 2 June 2018 I have added recent copies of the Maltonians newsletter - for Summer 2017 and Autumn 2017 - to the newsletter archive, for those who have not read them on the main Malton School website, or received a copy in print.
  • 20 May 2018 Work continues improving pages, making them more consistent, and filling gaps where required. I have added a page on Walter Brierley, the architect who designed Malton Grammar School. along with many other fine buildings around Yorkshire.
  • 9 May 2018 A handful of (fairly small) photos of musicians from 1999
  • 8 May 2018 Some more pictures from 1999, this time students using IT facilities such as they were at the time. I think these were taken as part of the fundraising initiative for the new library, which included transforming the old library into an ICT suite.
  • 27 April 2018 I have been doing quite a lot of work on improving file structure and sorting out redundant links on the website. Hopefully this has not resulted in any problems for anyone. Ideally no one should have noticed, but there have been some major changes to how the menus and links work. The work will continue for some time - with almost 600 pages on the site now it needs a good tidy, and each page needs to present a consistent design.
I have also managed to fix the search routine so that people can search the site for names or topics. This has not worked for some months due to a change of service provider. Note the routine only searches web pages, it will not find names embedded in pdf documents that are on the site.
If anyone comes across problems with the site, please let me know and I can give some attention to the matter.
  • 24 April 2018 Nicola also sent updates to the current staff list and the staff leavers list. These are now updated on the site.
  • 22 April 2018 School secretary Nicola Wise was kind enough to answer my request for school year group numbers for the past 10 years, in order that I could update and include here a table and chart of roll numbers 1971 - 2018. This shows the current year is the highest in the School's history, at 784. The lowest was 487 in 1994-5, when we had a 3-form entry. I believe this year is a 5-form entry, with a record 147 in Year 7.
  • 15 April 2018 Sorting through some papers I came across a Staff Notice from John Gresswell, October 1987. He gives some statistics comparing 'O' and 'A' level results of 1984-7 with those of the Grammar School 1966-71. He was responding to "forthright" comments from somewhere that said standards " are not those of the halcyon days of the Grammar Schools"
  • 15 April 2018 Some more photos from classes in 1999. This time English classes 1999.
  • 14 April 2018 A list of the staff of Malton School 1971, on its opening as a comprehensive school, has been added to the site. There is also an information letter issued to pupils and parents regarding the new school.
  • 13 April 2018 Some pictures taken around school in different classes - 1999
  • 21 March 2018 With Easter approaching I noticed that Malton School students were putting on a production of Fame before the holidays. I thought I would look back to Easter 2004, when we had two nights of music, dance, comedy and fashion with the 80s Night shows.
  • 12 March 2018 As we approach Sports relief day for 2008 (on Friday 23 March), I thought we might look back 10 years to the 2008 Sports Relief day: the mile, the tennis challenge Alex Carrie v Mr Williams, and the staff v Sixth Form football match.
  • 18 February 2018 I have been putting together photo galleries of scout and guide groups at Malton School over the years. In particular, I have added 33 guide photo from the 1920s, loaned to me for scanning back in 2003 by Phyllis Witty.
  • 17 February 2018 Some notes about the Malton Grammar School Hymn - Eternal Ruler of the Ceaseless Round - and a midi file of the tune, have been added to the documents list.
  • 3 February 2018 Three photos unearthed on a folder, loaned to me by Mary Train some years ago. Any information on them welcome. The first has Kenny Wright, David Train and Steven "Tiger" Preston plus one other. The second I think is Gladys Morris with school cooks on her retirement in 1982. The third is a newspaper clipping of a fashion show at Malton County Modern, with Ann Train and others (all named).
  • 1 February 2018 In 1982 there was an attempt to revive the school magazine, and The New Maltonian was published, in a similar booklet format to the old magazine. I think 6 editions appeared between 1982 - 1984. A summary of the contents of issues 2, 3, 5 and 6 is now on the site. I have never seen issue 1 and 4 - does anyone have a copy?
  • 25 January 2018 Another two exam papers from Pat Lund, this time the first year of GCE A level - 1951 physics, and 1954 biology A level papers
  • 18 January 2018 Prompted by reading in the 1949 Maltonian about the impending change from School Certificate to GCE O-level in 1951, I have updated the timeline of educational events, with this and a few other major changes over the years.
  • 14 January 2018 Two School Certificate Examinaton papers from 1949, donated by Pat Lund. Arithmetic, and English. There are more to follow. Does anyone else have any old exam papers?
  • 9 January 2018 Pat Lund passed on her copy of The Maltonian, November 1949, issue number 97. After a number of hours I have finally scanned and transcribed its 36 pages and it is now available on the site.
The idea of putting electronic copies of all the 126 Maltonians on the site may be fanciful - this one has taken much longer than anticipated. Although its pages were scanned using optical character recognition, given the faded small text, scanning has a habit of misreading some letters - particularly m for in, V/ for W, and 1 for I. A straight photocopy style image of the pages would not really suffice, as they are too difficult to read, cannot be searched, and take up a lot of space in file size. I will perservere with at least a few more copies. The first edition, plus one from the 20s, 30s and 40s are now fully transcribed and available.
  • 29 December 2017 Prompted by Simon Ewbank's email, I have put the tennis tournament records, such as I know them, onto the site. There are lots of gaps - can anyone help fill them in? I have also added Simon to the Victor Ludorem list on the Sports Day victors page. Again there are gaps - any information?
  • 13 December 2017 Pat Lund has recently returned to Broughton. Via John Horsman she passed on a number of photos and documents from her days at Malton Grammar School in the 1940s. I will be scanning these over the coming weeks, but to start with I have added a four page photographic tribute to her good friend Sheila Pratt.
  • 21 November 2017 With Children In Need taking place last weekend, I thought we might look back to 2003 Children in Need , the year I shaved off my beard.
  • 17 November 2017 I have added the last of the collection of letters and emails remembering life and people at Malton School in all three of its forms, going back to those arriving between 1999 and 2004
  • 4 November 2017 More memories of Malton Grammar School have been added - Mary Ledraw on her experience as an avacuee at Malton, Denise Barty on school in the 1930s, Vic Wilson - captain of Yorkshire CCC in the 1960s - on his time at MGS in the 1930s, Jean Evans on school life in the 1930s, and Brenda Holmes on the Old Maltonians Association.
  • 24 October 2017 I have been updating the Maltonians Memories page on the site - recording what people have emailed and written to me over the years abou their times at school and after leaving. They include memories of the late 50s and early 60s, being a wartime evacuee at Malton, life in Malton National School and Malton County Modern, memories of staff, and so much more. There is more to come, but so far communications from 2002 to 2017 are on the site.
  • 10 October 2017 Another 29 photos from the 2004 Sixth Form East Barnby trip have been added.
  • 8 October 2017 More photos from Sixth Form rresidential trips. This time from the 2008 East Barnby Trip.
  • 4 October 2017 The Sixth Form used to spend their first week in the sixth form at East Barnby outdoor pursuits centre, near Whitby. I am not sure if they still do. I have found some photos from 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2008. Some help confirming dates and names would be welcome.
  • 24 September 2017 It is 100 years since the first edition of The Maltonian - the school magazine - was published. I have now put a full transcript of the magazine on the site, plus some scans of the adverts that were in the small booklet. Have a look at The Maltonian issue 1 (April 1917)
  • 10 September 2017 Following an email from Elaine Burford, I have been adding information about watercolour painter George Nicholson to the site, and also tidying up the informaion about the painting of the old Malton Grammar School he did in the early 1800s. This has also resulted in some tidying up of links and indexes across the site.
  • 11 August 2017 To go with the sports day records, I have added a page listing tennis tournament winners from 1999 to the present day, with a few photos as well.
  • 4 August 2017 The end of term brought another sports day. There were just three records broken this year, so I have been updating the sports day records page accordingly. I have also started to work through the sports day reports over the last few years to create a list of the winning house each year, and the individual winners in each year group. These lists complement the existing list of winning house, and Victor / Victrix Ludorem for the Grammar School 1941 - 1970. I will continue to trawl back as far as I can in the coming weeks.
  • I have also added some photos from the 2005 Sports Day. Only 6 were in the file for that year, perhaps there are more in the archive.
  • 23 June 2017 Four photos of sports teams in 1952 have been added to the 1950s gallery page 1 - football, hockey, netball and tennis.
  • 22 June 2017 Programmes and powerpoint shows for last year's (2016) Celebration Evenings have been uploaded.
Also the Spring 2017 copy of the Maltonian magazine has been added to the newsletter index.
  • 21 June 2017 Rosy Taylor sent a number of old news clippings from her father's time as headmaster of Malton Grammar School. They are now available from a news clipping index page.
  • 20 June 2017 When I bumped in to headteacher Rob Williams today, he asked about the house system and previous colours. As a result I have found an old webite page which gives details of the house system over the years. I have updated it and added it to this version of the Maltonian Web. There are a few gaps, especially for the County Modern School. Any information welcome.
  • 18 June 2017 More Speech Day programmes, going back from 1952 - 1961, are now available. Rosy Taylor also donated some programmes for Old Maltonians Annual Dinner Dances, from 1955 to 1970. This prompted me to pull together a few items about the Old Maltonians Association, including these programmes, a constitution, pictures of an OMA blazer and badge, and some notes by Brenda Beal on her memories of the association, including its final demise in 1973.
  • 9 June 2017 Malton Grammar School Speech Day programmes from 1962 to 1968 are now on the site. These typically have a list of students and their exam successes at O level and A level, plus news of former students at universities or training colleges.
  • 8 June 2017 An inspection report from a Malton grammar School 1960 school inspection is now on the website..
  • 4 June 2017 A 1970 Speech Day programme from Rosy Taylor
  • 4 June 2017 A 1965 Malton Grammar School photo album from Rosy Taylor.
  • 3 June 2017 More material from Rosy Taylor. Some 1960s Malton Grammar School prospectuses, and a programme for a school production of The Tempest (1961).
  • 29 May 2017 Rosemary Thacker (Rosy Taylor) donated a box of material to the school archive. One item is a report on the first term of Malton School, 1971, which is now available on the site.
  • 26 May 2017 I have created a 1962 Malton Grammar School photo album, initiated by receiving a Form V photo from Paul Carr, and realising it is one of a number with the same background that must have been taken by a school photographer. I have pulled all similar photos into this new page. It is refreshing to find that there are still photos out there that I do not yet have on the site. Keep them coming please.

Recent Contacts

A message from Kitty Grove-Stevenson on 6 August 2018

Kitty (Thackray) posted via Facebook to tell me that Moreen Eason (nee Sagar) died last month at her home in New Zealand. She was at Malton Grammar School 1943 - 1948.

An email from John Holden on 6 March 2018

John was at school 1980 - 1985, and wonders if any records or information about the school swimming championships in those years exist? I cannot find anything in our archive. Does anyone have any memories or information? John wants to prove to his children that he held some records.

An email from Alfie Abbott on 6 February 2018

Alfie had been "looking down memory lane", and spotted his first name missing from a 1961 photo of students on a trip to Rievaulx Abbey. "They were good days."

A flurry of activity on Facebook, 3 February 2018

The photo of the school cooks in the 1980s created a lot of interest on Facebook. Stephen Nolan, Caroline Dale, Pamela Round, Daphne Smurthwaite Julie Kidson, Lesley Milner, Shan Dale, Robert Annis Richard Annis, Deborah Langthorne, Julia Jackson, Dave Couthard, all helped provide some names for the photo, though no-one actually confirmed it is Gladys Morris's retirement that occasioned the picture.

John Howard emailed 18 January 2018

John Howard sent a list of those Malton pupils who died in World War I and II, from the Malton War Memorial Restoration Committee. Some noted in the school records do not appear on the Memorial, and the committee is seeking to add missing names. John is the author of a book, Malton Goes to War. The list includes details of service, and where people died, as far as can be traced. Any additional information would be very welcome, particularly for two men - Wilfred Sowersby and Edmund Taylor - where the Commonwealth War Graves web pages have more than one entry with the same name.

Olive White posted on Facebook 7 January 2018

I noticed that Olive had found herself on a Facebook Maltonians page copy of the 1952 whole school picture. She left Malton Grammar School in 1955.

Simon Ewbank emailed on 28 December 2017

Simon emailed to fill in a few details on sporting records. Not surprisingly, he remembers the Tennis Tournament winner 1985 to 1989!

I was just browsing your excellent site, as I went to Malton School between 1983 and 1990. I noticed there is a lack of sports day and tennis tournament winners between those years. Have the records been lost? I might be able to help with some!
I won the boys singles tennis tournament in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988 & 1989, if my memory serves me correctly!!
I didn’t enter the singles in 1990, as I was on study leave, but did enter the mixed doubles with Jane Goodwill and we won it. Sorry I can’t help withwinners of the girls or other tournaments.
I also won the Victor Ludorem in 1988, jointly, with Richard Woolley, sorry I can’t remember the girl’s winner

Jess Leonard

Jess Leonard emailed on 1 December 2017.

Jess emailed wondering if I remembered her from 2003. Of course I do!. She is now head of social sciences in a school in Watford, having graduated from Durham University after school. She is still in touch with Anna Coles (Pietrowski) and Phillippa Chapman; they often reminisce about schooldays.

It is always good to hear from former students, and hear a little of their life after school.

David Thompson

David Thompson emailed on 3 October 2017.

David emailed to provide a few missing names for the photograph of the MGS Upper Sixth, 1968. He appears as one of the group. His information still leaves us with 5 names missing - can anyone else fill in the gaps?

Mike Smith

Elaine Burford emailed on 25 August 2017.
Elaine is researchig an ancestor, Thoms Ellerby, who painted a picture of George Nicholson in 1828. George wa himself a painter, and lived in Malton. He painted a watercolour of the Old Grammar School which I discovered in a store in 2008. Restored and re-framed, it now hangs in the East Wing of the school. Elaine is looking for any information about George or Thomas

Mike Smith

Mike Smith emailed on 12 August 2017.

Mike filled in a gap in the Sports Day Victor Ludorem list for 1963 - the only one missing from 1941 to 1970. He was the missing winner. He thinks the winning house that year was Fitzwilliam, but cannot remember the Victrix.

Colin Whelan

Colin Whelan sent a Friends form and email on 15 June 2017
I've really enjoyed looking through the site and it has brought back many happy memories. I am so lucky to have attended such a fantastic school and made many friendships that have lasted until the present day. We have  a yearly reunion in September/October at the Spotted Cow pub in Malton which is always well attended. This year will be particularly special as it is the 50th anniversary of our leaving.

Paul Carr

Rosemary Thacker (Rosy Taylor) visited school on 8 May 2017
Rosemary - daughter of Malton Grammar School headmaster Philip Taylor - dropped off a box of photographs, news clippings, documents, programmes, prospectuses, and other items relating to the Grammar School in the 1950s and 1960s. I will be scanning all this material and adding it to the website over the coming weeks.

Paul Carr

Paul Carr emailed on 24 May 2017

Paul sent a 1962 photo of form VA, of which he was a member. Paul was able to identify all the class members on the photo, so their names appear with the photo in the 1960s section. Paul was kind enough to say he enjoys memories of his schooldays sparked by this website.

Kitty Thackray

Kitty Grove-Stephenson (KittyThackray) emailed in April 2017

Kitty has been abseiling again, this time down the transporter bridge in Middlesbrough, to mark the opening of Fair Trade Fortnight in Teeside (February). Middlesbrough GazetteLive siid: The event marked the 84-year-old's contribution to life in the town spanning several decades. She has been associated with the Fairtrade movement for 30 years, managing the Fairtrade Shop at Middlesbrough Quaker Meeting House for more than 10 years, raising between £600 and £1000 each year. The widow, who lives in Linthorpe and is a mum, grandmother and great-gran, said: All in all the day was a great success and a very good launch of Fairtrade Fortnight - a joint effort for Middlesbrough, Stockton and Hartlepool. I've been passionate about Fairtrade for over 30 years and it is so important to keep it in the public eye - it is easy for big multi-nationals to get the best of the market by price cutting, when we know that it is the producers who absolutely need the money to spend on health, sanitation, education and general well-being.

Sue McIntyre sent some booklets on 3 February 2017

Sue found a 1920s school prospectus, and a 1936 Maltonian, whilst sorting through her mother's belongings. Her mother was Nancy Sonley, born in 1915, who attended the school along with her sister Joan.

Estella Nobles and Annie Lorton posted on Facebook 2 February 2017

Estella and Annie both spotted their grandfather, Alfred Barty, in a 1951 staff photo recently posted on the Maltonians Facebook page. Estalla notes that A.B. taught for 36 years at the school. Born in 1896, died 1970.

Andrew and Ian Rettie posted on Facebook 26 January 2017

Andrew and Ian Rettie, and Marion Hayhurst, engaged in a discussion of a 1971 photo with Alan Robinson. All the names are on the website, so hopefully their discussions as to who each person was has been solved by them looking at the website, and not just the photo I posted on Facebook.

Joan Kelly

Jo Eggleton Rance (Joan Kelly at school) emailed on 2 January 2017

Jo emailed in response to my recently posting some 1969 photos and the summary of Maltonians 1966-71. Her sister Judith had sent her a link to these pages. She tells me that she drew the picture of Janet Elliot in the Maltonian 1968, and also gave me some names for the photos of the 1969 orchestra and the cast of St Patrick's Day (1969). I have put the rest of her email in the Memories section.

Margaret Sheikh (nee Carr) sent a Friends form 28 December 2016

Margaret emailed to tell me she was Head Girl at Malton County Modern, 1959-60 with Peter Lightfoot as Head Boy. I have added the names to the Head Boy and Girl list, She tells me "When I left I went to Scarborough College, along with several other pupils from the school, to do an O level course. I went to Leeds General Infirmary to train as a nurse and later did midwifery training in Worcester and Birmingham". She is currently living in Chesterfield.

Richard Thornton

Richard Thornton emailed on 12 November 2016

Richard emailed to tell me had recently attended the funeral of an old school friend, John Clark, who was at school 1943 - 49. He spotted an aerial photo of the School in John's photo collection, and wondered if we had it in our archive. We do, it matches the one we have marked as 1951 in the aerial photos collection.

Christopher Holder wrote a letter in November 2016

Christopher wrote to enquire about the History of Malton School book. As far as I know there are still copies available, from the school. Christopher tells me he was the first Head Boy at Malton County Modern, 1958. He tells me that Jennifer Ramsden was Head Girl. Are there any other head boys or girls out there - this list is a little thin for the County Modern?

Rob Williams sent an email on 7 November 2016 Rob Williams

Headteacher at Malton School, Rob Williams, contacted me to ask if I had any information about the VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) hospital on York Road during World War 1. The Malton War Memorial Project ate working on an exhibition about Malton at War. If anyone has any information please do get in touch, either with me or the school.

Rob also asked if it would be possible to put copies of The Maltonian magazine on the website. It is possible, so I will be starting scanning them in the near future. With 127 copies spanning 54 years, it could take a while, but it will be done.

Howard Fox sent an email on 4 November 2016 Howard Fox

Howard contacted me with information on the Ships photo recently posted, from an Alan Martindale collection. Apparently it was a stage setting for the play The Critic, produced by Mr Rolls.

He also passed on the news that Peter Lomas had passed away (at school 1953 – 1960). He played in many of the MGS sports teams and played parts in school plays in his last two years at the school.
