Results Day 17 August 2000

The pass rate was once again very high at 95.3%. - that is 6 percent above the national average of 89%, and the third time in the last four years that we have scored in excess of 90%

19% of grades achieved were A grades - 2% higher than the national average.

Every student passed at least one subject, continuing our remarkably long run of being able to make this claim (seven years now)

We appear to mirror the national trend for girls to do better than boys - with girls achieving total points scores 2 points higher than the boys on average. However, the best three individual performances did come from boys:

Best individual performances include Matthew Hayward with AAAAC, Tim Lawes with AAAA and Bill Hetherton with AAAB. Twins Kate and Lucy Dodsworth managed to avoid any arguments by each achieving two A's and two B's, and Hayley Brewer with two A's and a B becomes our first student to achieve an A in the Home Economics Department. In addition, Hayley received a letter from the Chief Examiner congratulating her on being one of the top five students in the country with her Home Economics result.

GCSE Results Day 24 August 2000

Malton School is pleased to report another very good year's results, with some outstanding performances from individual students.

Deputy Head Stephen Fearnley commented: 'Some of our students have produced quite amazing performances in their exams. The best results came from Leah Jackson-Blake, with eight A* and two A grades, and Sam Clarke with five A* and 4 A grades. Both also got A* in their Short Course Information Technology exam.

Results overall were not as good as last year's - 1999 was our best year on record - they are more in line with the 1998 performance. One aspect of the results we are very pleased with is the increasing depth of performance across the full ability range - this year we hit our ambitious target that every student would pass at least one GCSE (3 passes was the lowest), and in fact 98% of the group achieved 5 or more passes.'

Some other headline summary facts and figures:

  • The girls outperformed the boys, in line with the growing national trend. On average girls scored 7 points more per individual than the boys, and 61% of girls achieved 5 or more A*-C grades, compared with 44% of boys. Although this imbalance has been the case for many years nationally, it has not always been mirrored in Malton - last year it was the boys who did better than the girls here.
  • The average points scored per student was 40.1 this year. This is the second year we have passed the 40 mark, though it is not as high as last year's 41.5. Our stated target is to achieve at least 42 points by 2001 - we will have to do it next year!
  • The percentage of entries achieving grade C or better was 58%
  • The percentage of students on roll gaining 5 or more grades at A*-C was 53% - down on last year, the same as we achieved in 1998.
  • One fourteen year old student gained an A* in Portuguese, having recently arrived from Brazil.
