MISS SEDGWICK, who came in September 1952 to teach French and English, left at Christmas to prepare for teaching in a missionary field.
She will be remembered here longest for her essential gentleness of nature; a conscientious and loyal teacher, she achieved much by a quiet persistence. At times she seemed too kind with some of our more insensitive pupils, and yet many of these ended by respecting and admiring her refusal to admit that they were irredeemable. Miss Sedgwick had plenty of determination and unobtrusively extracted improved work from many a weaker brother.
Out of class she helped the School by editing the Magazine. She instituted a system of collectors or "encouragers" in each Form who obtained a great amount of work from their classmates. Here again her doggedness reaped results. She was a good violinist and never, I think, missed a School Orchestra practice; the members of the Orchestra were fond of her pleasant companionship. In another far different sphere also she showed her sense of service. She undertook and managed well the school stationery, a job which is as vital to the smooth running of the school as it is arduous.
Miss Sedgwick has for long done active work in the Church, so that her sense of vocation for work overseas seems to arise naturally from her profession, her religion and her temperament. At the moment she seems likely to be asked to work in Madagascar, which is French-speaking; but wherever she is called to do this Christian service, she will take with her our good wishes and prayers that she may find in the work a deep spiritual satisfaction.
