An interesting short booklet charting the history of Malton, in particular in the development of trade in the town, through the many family businesses which give the town its character. It also tells the story of the Marquess of Rockingham and the Fitzwilliam family's involvement in the area. The Shambles, homes, halls and hospitals, The Milton rooms, 58 The Market Place, and the development of trade via the river, and later the railway are all covered. So too are the business families - Smithsons, Allens, Taylors and Wrays, Ralph Yates, Leefe's, Tate-Smiths, Fox, and George Woodall and Sons all receive mention. The booklet finishes with a look at Malton now and its amibitions for the future as a thriving market town and "food capital".

The main research was undertaken by Norman Maitland. The booklet is, or was, on sale at £5, though I was kindly given a copy for my interest.
