Notes on two masters' appointments

This brief note may have been bundled with other papers. It gives some details of the masters appointed in 1779 and 1783. Samuel Jackson seems to have been master in name only, drawing his salary whilst holding another position, and paying the usher, at a reduced rate, to do the actual teaching. Presumably this accounts for his relatively short tenure, and the comment in the 1783 note.

April 12 1779 Samuel Jackson Clerk was licensed to perform the Office of Master and Governor of the Free Grammar School of Old Malton in the County of York founded by Robert Holgate otherwise Halgate formerly Archbishop of York vacant by the death of Joseph Kerr the past Master thereof and belonging to the Donation and free disposition of His Grace William Lord Archbishop of York William Markham, Archbishop 1777-1807 in full right of his Archbishoprick.

September 18 1783 William Johnson Clerk was appointed and licensed to perform the Office of Master and Governor of the Free Grammar School of Robert Halgate otherwise Holgate Archbishop of York, in Old Malton in the County of York vacant by the removal or deprivation of Samuel Jackson Clerk the last Master and Governor thereof for entire neglect thereof (agreeable to the statutes and constitutions of the said school) and belonging to the donation and free disposition of his Grace William Lord Archbishop of York in full right of his see.
