Maltonians document archive - John Estill Solicitor Papers
Some letters involving Mr Lonsdale, Mr Allen and Mr Walker, around 1834. I noticed that in the York University Archives there are Old Malton Parish records, with an interesting paragraph:
82 Letter from W. Lonsdale to W. Allen referring to the recent riots and informing him that warrants had been issued against 12 individuals to arpear at the next Northallerton quarter Sessions. The writer refers to the premeditated insult that was all but carried into effect at Old Malton church and that he has placed himself under the protection of the magistracy. He deplores the scandalous Proceedings that have long disgraced Old Malton 2 Feb. 1835.I must make a visit to the University sometime!
Mr Todd's letter to Thomas Walker
5 November 1834
Mr Todd was the Archbishop of Cleveland 1832-1845. Here he writes a letter to a solicitor, Mr Walker. He appears to be trying to act as arbiter in a dispute.
Letter to Thomas Walker Esq., Solicitor, Malton
Mr Todd begs to present his compliments to Mr J T Walker, & to say that two letters have been sent to Mr T by the archbishop of York’s order, the one by Mr J.W. the other by Mr Lonsdale. Mr T has proposed to Mr L that these letters should be read in the presence of both Mr L & Mr T. W. And as Mr Allen’s name is mentioned in both the letters, Mr T has further proposed that Mr A should also be present at the readings; & accordingly has written to Mr A, asking if it would be agreeable to him & if so, that tomorrow morning at ten o’clock, supposing Mr T. W. to accede, as Mr L does, to what has been stated, they might meet at Mr A’s house.
Settrington, Nov 5 1834.
1834 A proposal from Mr Allen
6 November 1834
A brief note from Mr Allen, one of the signatories to the letter to the Archbishop, offering a solution to the problems of 1834. He is probably William Allen, Earl Fitzwilliam’s agent and a banker, certainly from 1820 onwards. His suggestion was not accepted by Mr Lonsdale, the appointed master at the time. Mr Lonsdale gave a brief reply in the negative.
A transcript of the note is available.

Mr Lonsdale's reply to Mr Allen's proposal
6 November 1834
A very brief, curt reply to Mr Allen from Mr Lonsdale. Perhaps he didn't like being told to pay an usher £20.
The Revd Mr Lonsdale Sir
Sends his compts to Mr. Allen & begs leave to say that he cannot consent to the Proposals submitted to his consideration this morning

Booklist written by Mr Londsale
Not dated
A booklist written by Mr Lonsdale. It appears to be bundled with the other letters from November 1834, but it is unclear what the purpose is.
