In 1986 Malton School teacher Elizabeth Shields caused a major political upset by winning a by-election and taking the normally strong Conservative seat of Ryedale.
She held on to the seat until the general election of 1987. She wrote a small booklet recording the events of that year, and was kind enough to donate a copy of the booklet to the school archive when I met her at the school's Easter concert, in April 2009.
Below are a few of the photographs from the booklet.
