Posted 3 January 2024 I have been scanning another of The Maltonian magazines. This one is The Maltonian, September 1965, Issue 120, and it is a large edition, with 110 pages, plus 20 pages of adverts. I have made the usual compromise between file size and clarity in converting this to a pdf document hopefully it is readable on screen. I have put the adverts in a separate pdf to help restrict the file size.
The magazine covers the usual areas of school life and communications from Old Maltonians, as well special features on the publication of The History of Malton Grammar School, a fond memorial of Thomas Arthur Williams by Mr Barty, sad memories of a student who had died - Simon Reed, thoughts on the looming prospect of comprehensive education (by DJP - I think probably Mr Pay). The adverts include The Floral Cafe at Rillington, and the York County Savings Bank (5% interest!). The whole was edited by Mr Lucas, and is printed on good quality glossy paper by Horsley & Dawson printers, Driffield.
Posted 9 January 2024 The annual Celebration Evening for Key Stage 4 and 5 students took place just before Christmas, and as usual my woodturning business oldfern provided individual trophies for the winning students. It was the 25th such evening - I introduced the first one to the annual school calendar in 1999. Posted 25 January 2024 A photo of the Norton Bower Memorial School spotted on M&N Memories Malton and Norton Memories Facebook Page in January 2024, too good not to include on this site in the Other Schools pages. Children and teacher all with the stern faces common to early photographs - the post suggests this one is around 1900.
Posted 26 January 2024 Three photos posted on M&N Memories Malton and Norton Memories Facebook Page . The two of students are from 1944 and 1955, and the building in late 1950s, probably close to its demolition.

Posted 28 January 2024 A news clipping posted by John McMurran on M&N Memories Malton and Norton Memories Facebook Page in May 2018. This is Cobra Patrol from 1958, at a camp in Kirkdale with Mr Sargeant (the scoutmaster). Seeing this prompted me to update the existing pages on Scouts and Guides available on this site.
Posted 30 January 2024 Another photo spotted on M&N Memories Malton and Norton Memories Facebook Page . This lifeboat crew includes John Whitehead, who was youth tutor at Malton School from 1971 - 1981, before moving to Filey. This photo prompted an update to the In Later Days page - a gallery of photos of staff and students after they had left school.
Posted 2 February 2024 Alan Hughes, who died towards the end of January 2024. Posted by his son Graeme on M&N Memories Malton and Norton Memories Facebook Page . Alan was a pupil at MGS from 1959 - 1967, and went on to teach chemistry (with Howard Campion) at Fulford School, 1979 - 2008.
Posted 6 February 2024 A photo of a head boy badge sent in by Mark Windle in February 2024. He confirms he was head boy from 1976-7, and that Jayne Wilford was head girl at the same time, as noted in the Head Boys and Girls list on the site.
Posted 26 February 2024 Malton School is to open The Sheila Pratt Memorial Sixth Form Study Centre at the end of this term, which has been converted from the former Grammar School hall, then library, using a large legacy that Sheila left to the School. Sheila was at school 1943 - 1950: some tributes to her are on the website. If anyone reading this remembers Shiela, the School would be happy to invite you along to the formal opening of the Memorial Centre, if you able to attend. If you email me in the first instance I will pass on details to the School.
Posted on 27 February 2024 I thought it was time to tackle getting the Year 11 Leavers' Prom pictures up to date, filling in some gaps where I can, and bringing them all into the new site format. The events have taken place at the end of year 11 since 2003, and 2003-2006 have been on the website for some time. I have left those in the old format for now, while adding photos from 2007 onwards, and creating a new index page.
Posted on 9 April 2024 Phil Gaskell sent me five photos from a Class of '68 reunion back in July 2022. The group meets regularly, about 4 times a year, via Zoom, and occasionally in person as on this day when they visited the school, St Mary's Church in Old Malton, "a local stately home", the Old Lodge, and the home of Andrew and Marian Stainsby.
Posted on 11 April 2024 I have uploaded a scan of the September 1968 Maltonian, issue Number 123. There is also a set of advertisements which were in the original magazine, no doubt included to provide some sponsorship and help finance the publication. A copy of the magazine was sent to me in February 2024 by Nigel Blakeborough, who now lives in SW France. He also sent a copy of a July 1963 Maltonian - to follow. Editor in chief for the magazine was Eddie Lucas, along wiht a student committee of 12. The pages include the usual factual information, some literary gems, notes from Old Maltonians, along with illustrations including lino-cuts and a couple of photos - Alan Hughes' high jump, and Heather Richardson painting.
Posted on 11 April 2024 A gathering to witness the formal opening of the new Sheila Pratt Memorial Sixth Form Study Centre took place on the last day of term before Easter. Governors, staff, friends of the School and friends of Sheila Pratt gathered to see the fruits of Sheila's generosity. Further information and a few photos are on a new page about the opening
Posted on 15 April 2024 Nigel Blakeborough sent me two old Maltonian magazines back in February 2024 - here is the second one, The Maltonian No. 116, July 1961. Items include an article about Katherine Worsley's marriage to HRH the Duke of Kent; the start of 12+ transfer from MCM, new summer dresses for girls, Terry Dyson heading the second goal for Tottenham Hotspur in the cup final, giving them the double; and much more. There are more Maltonian scans and summaries available.
Posted 23 April 2024 I have been tidying up the Maltonians pages recently, correcting missing links on the index page and converting some of the page files to the new responsive format. Lots more to do, but a lot better than it was. Also following on from the inputs regarding Sheila Pratt, I found a detailed obituary of her schoolmate and lifelong friend, Pat Lund, who died in December last year. Links are below.
Posted on 23 April 2024 Pat Lund was at Malton Grammar School 1943-1950, and went on to become "a distinguished scientist who succeeded in surmounting not only the ‘glass ceiling’ but also the toughened ‘glass door’ through which women had to pass to enter a male-dominated environment, by her talent and determination. ... she was a lady with predictably positive poise who gave elegance to this environment – always immaculately turned out, she alone in the lab managed to make a white lab coat look like a fashion accessory ". She worked in Metabolic Reseach in the USA and in Oxford, in a team with Nobel Prize winner Sir Hans Krebs. A detailed obituary from The Biochemist website is available on this site.
Posted on 6 May 2024 Elisabeth Rolf (Elisabeth Crowther) emailed to introduce herself and give some names for photos on the website. Elsabeth was at Malton Grammar School 1955 - 63 (she was head girl in 1963), her brother John and sister Cathleen were also pupils, and her mother Winifred Atkin and aunt Eleanor Atkin were also there - in fact Eleanor was the first entry on the school register in 1911, returning as a teacher in 1921.
Elisabeth pointed out Eleanor in the centre of the 1912 hockey team photo in the 1910-1919 photo gallery, with Winifred also present (on the right, middle row). Winifred is also on an early group photo on the same page, probably from 1915.
It is refreshing to find that people still have connections to the early days of the School, and we can still add details.

Posted on 11 May 2024 More Year 11 leavers' prom photos, this time from 2009. Yet another pleasant sunny evening, with a lovely group of students enjoying themselves near the end of their year at school. In the photo are the organisers, Ben Holtby, Rose Buckland, James Kellett and Georgina Baker. There are over 100 more photos of the evening on the 2009 Year 11 Prom pages. Posted on 24 June 2024 A collection of photos from the Year 11 prom in 2010 - yet another lovely sunny evening. Some unusual methods of arrivals, including horses, limousine, and mobility scooters! The evening was organised by Head Boy and Girl Alex Tate-Smith and Harry Francis, and deputies Ian Mason and Ellie Hogarth.
Posted on 9 July 2024 Richard Taylor emailed to tell me the names of everyone in the 1971 Malton Grammer School Under 14 football team, as photographed in the 1971 Photo album - the final year of Malton Grammar School.
Posted on 22 July 2024 Last week a set of papers relating to The Free Grammar School of Old Malton appeared for auction on eBay. The seller, Iain Colquhoun, was kind enough to alert me to these, and I was able to download the numerous photos he posted on eBay of all the documents. I will work my way through these gradually, starting with a 1932 typescript which looks like draft notes about the Masters of the Old Grammar School prior to 1911, probably researched in connection with the 21st anniversary celebrations of the new school opening on Middlecave Road. A full transcript is available on the website, and I have also updated the list of Masters which has been on the site for some time, taken from Nigel Hudleston's Book on the History of Malton and Norton.
Posted on 23 July 2024 More from the Estill auction papers. This is a group of items from 1932, relating to the 21st anniversary celebrations of Malton Grammar School opening on Middlecave Road (i.e. at its present site). I have transcribed a four-page article about the school's founder, Robert Holgate, Archbishop of York. A realistic portrayal of a seemingly selfish and avaricious man caught in the upheaveals of the reformation under Henry VIII and Thomas Cromwell. There is an invitation for planning an Elizabethan Fair, a 21st Birthday week programme, and a 21st birthday notice regarding sale of left-over items
. Also two school postcards - the Science Laboratory and The old School Hall - which had been sent to G F A Newey. I have placed these on the postcards page.
Posted on 29 July 2024 I don't usually cover current news on this site, leaving that to the main Malton School website. However I thought I should mark a significant point in history, when in May this year the school ceased to be a North Yorkshire County Council school and became an Academy. Of particular interest is that Malton has paired up with Archbishop Holgate's School in York, very appropriate given their shared history, both being founded in Henry VIII's time by Robert Holgate. I have put a press release on the site noting the changeoever when Malton School became a Pathfinder Multi Academy Trust (PMAT) School.

Posted on 21 September 2024 I have spent the last five weeks working my way through documents put up for sale from the office of John Estill, a solicitor in Malton. Many of these relate to a turbulent period for Education in the 1830s and 1840s, with letters justifying the move for the school from Old Malton to Sutton Grange in Norton, petitions from local inhabitants, a copy of the Grammar School Act of 1840, and many other items of interest in trying to trace the history of Malton Grammar School. Many of the letters are faint and have folds in them, which combined with the archaic language, abbreviations and florid handwriting has made transcribing them quite difficult, but I have done my best. There is an index to all these Estill papers (28 web pages, probably 40 pages of documents), with scans and transcriptions.

Posted on 27 October 2024 I have been updating the Sports Day records, not having done so since the break due to Covid in 2020. Results and records are now up to date, though there are a couple to double check with staff at school as they don't seem quite right. I have also re-written the pages to come into the responsive website style adopted for the website since 2021.

Posted on 22 November 2024 Geraint Llewellyn, who volunteers to collect information for the IBCC International Bomber Command Centre , sent me an email about William Goodwill, who appears on the Maltonians War Memorial, which lists students and staff who died in service in the World Wars. William Goodwill was born in Hovingham, the only son of John and Mary Agnes Goodwill. John Goodwill was a butcher and smallholder: the family lived , in the High Street at the house now called Lumley House. He went to the village school and on, with a scholarship, to Malton Grammar School. After leaving school he worked for a time for his father, but on 13th September 1939 he joined the RAF, being trained as a wireless operator.There are more details from Geraint on a Tributes and Obituaries page
Posted on 15 December 2024 On 23 October 2024 staff, students and guests gathered for the formal opening of the new library, which has been moved from East Wing to what was the music centre, and before that the Youth Centre. It has been named after Maxwell Morrison who was present at the evening, in recognition of the considerable support for the school provided in recent years by the Morrison Family Charitable Trust.
